Black History

The Past & The Future Merge To Meet Us Here

Today, September 8th, 2016, we celebrate the 62nd birthday of the phenomenal Ruby Bridges. Ruby was the first Black child to attend an all-white public elementary school in the south. Ruby desegregated William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana in 1960. Only 56 years ago.

61 years ago, at the innocent age of 14, Emmett Til was brutally lynched for whistling at a white woman. After days of relentlessly searching for Emmett’s body, his corpse was found mutilated in the Tallahatchie River. Despite having clear evidence that the two white men accused of lynching him committed the crime, an all-white jury returned after an hour of deliberation with a “Not Guilty” verdict. Only 61 years ago.

Little over a year ago, we lost the beautiful and resilient, Sandra Bland. Sandra Bland was pulled over for a minor traffic violation on July 10th by officer Brian Encinia. Officer Encinia arrested Sandra after notifying her that he was letting her off with a warning. He claimed that Sandra assaulted him, however the dashcam footage proves otherwise. Only a year ago.
